We're trying out Meeting room 2 @ Burnaby Lake Sports Centre West again. The event description includes a map showing the location, it is just to off Joe Sakic way near the Christine Sinclaire Centre (the Old Fortius). Another Important Note: There isn't a plan for catering at this point, beyond perhaps Tim Horton's muffins or donuts. Feel free to bring your own food, though. |

Ashton Kerr's Bio: Ashton Kerr is the Program Manager of the Lower Mainland Green Team (LMGT), a program of the charity Green Teams of Canada (GTC). Ashton has been with GTC since 2018, having started off as a LMGT volunteer, served on GTC's Board of Directors and now working as a full-time staff member. Through hands-on activities in nature, she is bringing communities together to improve health, well-being and environmental stewardship. She looks forward to sharing the important work of her Green Team with the Rotary Club of Burnaby! |

For this week's presentation, we will have Burnaby More Sport's Maria to discuss their efforts; this organization is one of the recipients of Heart of the Matter raffle and has been involved in work to promote healthy and active life styles with vulnerable populations in particular. Note that the start time is a bit later as Maria will only present starting at 12:30, though I'll have the Zoom room open at noon if people wanted to chat before then. Maria's Bio: Maria Bamba has been in the Recreation field for over 20 years. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Fitness Education at McGill University and focused on Fitness training and Sports conditioning for 8 years before moving onto combining her love of travel and sports becoming a Sports Supervisor on cruise ships for Royal Caribbean cruise lines for three years. When she decided to stay on land, she gained more experience working with recreation organizations focusing on children's programs as a Sports leader with Sportball, Youth and Families Director with YMCA and a Children's Activity Worker with Options Community Services Society before furthering her education earning a Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management. She started as Program Coordinator for Burnaby Moresports since 2012 and is presently the Program Manager. She also works for the City of Burnaby as an auxiliary Recreation Leader in the side. She feels fortunate to work with her passion for Sports and children and loves mentoring her team to deliver sports programs that teach children and youth life skills.

This week's presentation is from Timothy from the Rotary Club of Hai-Kilimanjaro Tanzania who is an Assistant Governor for District 9214 who is presenting on "Empowering vulnerable children through education". Author Bio: I am a law Practitioner in Tanzania. I am the founder and Director of the SAIDIA AGRICULTURE AND SOCIAL CARE ORGANISATION (SASCO), an organization that has empowered more than 200 vulnerable children through Education. I am one of the charter members and Past President of the Rotary Club of Hai-Kilimanjaro. Currently, I serve as an Assistant Governor in my District 9214 which combines Uganda and Tanzania. |

With the Metrotown Club, our club is potentially doing a walk around on Saturday February 26th at 10 am central park at the parking lot on Patterson near Kingsway (where the interact walk took place last fall). The idea is to support the Coldest Night of the Year event that supports the Society to End Homeless, an organization that we have supported previously that performs homeless support and outreach. For now here is a write-up from a sailing website as it relates to a ship he may have used in his travels that he will discuss: "With almost 40 years sailing under his belt, Gord Wylie is a veteran of the new boat ownership club, having four keelboats so far. His favourite? The J/29. It was his first keelboat and chance to be a skipper while being in charge of crew. He got the boat fixed up over time and turned it into a winning boat. His focus now though is his new XP44, which he sails out of Royal Vancouver Yacht Club." Note: Double vaccination required for attendance. Please confirm with Satwant or Ryan about physical attendance by the 16th. Though restrictions are ongoing, their is an expectation of masks and consideration of others that may be immunocompromised. |

Update: The presentation will be on Zoom. The presentation is an update on Shelterbox by Meg Schmeider including their efforts in Ukraine. Author Bio: Meg spent their younger years in a small town of 200 people called Grayson in the province of Saskatchewan and bring that small town hospitality with them wherever they go. Since then, they’ve completed their honours undergraduate degree in Ottawa at Carleton University in Public Affairs & Policy Management with a specialization in International Affairs. The 3 years Meg has spent in Toronto have been busy organizing locally around climate change and food security. Meg embodies "think globally, act locally" through their involvement in Toronto food and water security programs, experience travelling internationally on trade missions, and their work with ShelterBox. Meg has been on the ShelterBox team for 7 months now and is excited to be working with amazing volunteers and Rotarians who all share the commitment of a world where everyone has access to shelter post disaster. |

For this week's meeting, we have Karl Perrin's presentation on "A Major Climate Solution: Girl's Education". Let's look forward to hearing about environmental efforts through improving access to education. Presenter Bio: Karl Perrin is a retired Speech-Language Pathologist. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer and Staff in Afghanistan 1967-1969. Since 1993 he has been trying to reduce Climate Change, personally and through organizations, to benefit his son’s generation. Note: I can confirm that the Burnaby West Sports Complex will be the location for the meeting. See everybody there (online or offline)! |

For this week's meeting, we have presentation by Anika from Blood Services Canada on the importance and value of blood donations, especially due to ongoing shortages. Author Bio: Anika McDonald is a Community Development Manager for Canadian Blood Services. Driven by patients’ needs, including several family members who needed blood and blood products, she takes pride in providing the education and tools necessary to procure blood donors. In addition to her goal of increasing the number of blood donors in our communities, Anika is committed to ensuring that new and returning blood donors make lifesaving donations a part of their routine. Note: Meeting is at the Christine Sinclair Complex in the multipurpose room. |
